ONE, we will have a traditional VBS with a twist this
year. Our theme is the “Jerusalem Market Place”. Of
course, we will have stories from the Bible, songs,
games, crafts with lots of things to see, hear, taste,
touch, and smell. However, all our activities will
take place in “families” and “tribes”. We will need
fathers, mothers, big brothers, big sisters, little
brothers, little sisters, and of course, grandparents
for each of our families. We expect to have 4 family
groups based on the tribes of Israel, so we will have
room for everyone. In addition to family members, we
will need “actors” to dramatize the stories and
“shopkeepers” to lead our crafts, games and musical
activities.
The traditional VBS will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. At
7:30, all our participants will come together for a
short closing service. Then everyone with an early
bedtime can go home full of the message of the day.
TWO, several members of our church’s youth group will
be involved in the VBS. [You know who you are....THANK
YOU.] After the younger kids go home, they will have a
chance to get ready for the next day. Plus, they will
have their own time to reconnect and reflect on the
word of God and the world around us. We expect the
youth program to run from 8 p.m. to 9:30 or 10 p.m. We
will be working out the details at our club meetings
on April 20th and May 18th.
THREE, just in case the youthful exuberance of the VBS
is TOO much, we plan to have at least two additional
tracks running at the same time as the VBS, 6:15 to
7:30 p.m. The “Parent Track” will have a different
speaker presenting on a different, very practical
topic, each night. The “Older Adult Track” may run the
same way or we may ask our participating elders to
consider “designing a ministry by and for older
adults”.
ONE-TWO-THREE, I hope you will agree that there will
be a little something for everyone. At the end of the
week, we will be tired, howver we will have also spent
7 days (if you count the Sundays before and after the
VBS) learning and worshipping together. It is my
sincere hope and prayer that the sense of community
created will carry us through the remainder of the
summer and into the fall.
WHAT NOW?
+ Please set these evening aside as a special time to
reconnect with your church family;
+ Please plan to be at Cheverly United Methodist
Church for this special event:
+ Please pray for the VBS organizers, Melanie
Hartwig-Davis, Brian Youmans and Cate Abbott as we
begin to pull this event together;
+ Please pray that volunteers step forward to lead the
VBS and track activities; and
+ Please pray that our actions will reach the
children, parents, youth and older adults in our
community.
With God, all things are possible.
I will keep you posted on our progress by email and
Sunday bulletin inserts.
Peace & a hug from your sister in Christ,
Cate Abbott
